Teaching your dog to Stay can be incredibly useful. It's best to learn the Sit command first, as this is effectively an extension of that technique. This lesson will teach you how to give the command and gain your puppy's cooperation too! Are you ready?

stay Attach a 6ft leash. This stops your puppy from wandering off too far and keeps you in control.

stay Start this lesson by getting your puppy in the Sit position. Stand on his right side.

stay Say Stay and put your hand in front of your puppy's face.

stay Move around in front of your puppy. Keep your hand firmly in his line of sight.

stay Slowly increase the distance away from your puppy. If he follows, just start again.

stay When he gets it right, say Yes to reinforce the command.

stay Return to his right side and release him with an Ok, then praise and reward him.

stay Practice this exercise a few times a day for about 5-10 minutes at a time. Slowly increase the distance between you and your puppy.
